CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

SATURDAY'S PLAY W. M. HOGG THE WINNER. Tlie champion of champions compel if ion in the Dunedin Bowling Centre ended on Saturday afternoon, the laurels going to W. M. Hogg (Dunedin Club). In the afternoon Hogg (one life) met' W. Carswell (Taicri), who had two lives. Hogg hud thus to bout Carswell twice, and this ho did.

As there was a chance of the first game being the final, the centre, acting in accord with a ruling by the Dominion Council, tested the howls of both players. The test was begun soon after midday, and look up a considerable amount, of time. The test showed that Carswell’s bowls did not come up to the standard draw. Slight alteration was needed, and this caused the game to begin a£ 2.35 p.m., sixty-five minutes later than the hour fixed for starling. The view expressed by some was that bowls which did not pass the test for the final games should not have been used earlier m the contest, and that those defeated by Carswell had cause for complaint in regard to injustice. It was not suggested that Carswell had acted at all unfairly, the criticism being levelled at the system by which the bowls were not tested at the beginning of the competition.
