LAKE LOGAN AREA

HARBOR BOARD'S POSITION In his annual report to the Harbor Board the Chairman (Mr D. Larnach) referred as follows to the Lake Logan area

“Members will bo conversant with the results of the several conferences with the City Council, Education Board, and University. As an outcome of these conferences, briefly stated, the board’s commitments with regard to the,'area "are:— ' “'City Council.—'Tlie lease of 'Lake Logan (the area already alienated to the University Council to be subject to adjustment between the two councils], for a sports area for a period of . ninety-nine years, with tho right of renewal for a further period of ninety-nine years, at a peppercorn rental, the council lo construct a highway from Anzac square to Union street, and carry out” all necessary drainage. “ With respect to the carrying of the Opoho conduit to the harbor, wo agreed to make a payment of £IO,OOO towards its cost on condition that this sum is tho maximum amount to be paid by us. Wo also agreed to pay 25 per cent; towards tho cost of construction of Union street.

“Education . Board Site.—lt having been pressed on the board that tho success of the carrying of the highway loan was jeopardised by the Education Board retaining their eight acres on lire Lake Logan area, and to do all that was possible to help the highway project, wo offered to the Education Board in lieu of tho Lake Logan site an area of eight acres, with frontages to the Leith canal esplanade and 415 ft to the proposed highway. This alternative site was accepted by the Education Board.

“ University Council.—The board's original agreement with the University Council still stands, this being an area of twenty acres, with a frontage of 120 ft to Union street. As already indicated, the University Council’s actual area and conditions are now a matter for adjustment (between the two councils." Mr Walker said that ho noticed one omission in the report. When tho question of filling up Lake Logan was brought forward grave doubt had been expressed about whether tho engineer would have the work done in time for the Exhibition. It had also been suggested that the dredge should be brought to Dunedin. Air Wilkie, however, stated that the work could be done, and he thought that a tribute should he paid to him for having carried it out before the estimated time, whilst it had gone on .like clockwork. He thought that some reference should have been made to the valuable work canned out by tho board’s engineer, staff, and workmen. Tho-Chairman explained that reference had been made to what had been done in connection, with Lake Logan. The matter then dropped, and the report was adopted.
