Probably the best story ever told of Saran Bernhardt is that, when she was appearing in her enormous success of ‘L'Aiglon, by her favorite dramatist, Edmond Rostand, some years before the war, an ambitious Teutonic theatrical manager cabled her for her lowest terms fox a special engagement in Berlin. She was said, a writer recalls, to have tersely and patriotically replied: “Alsace-Lorraine!'’ When the famous actress was asked in .America if this story Wra true, she replied: “ No, but I wish it were; it is so clever.” The man wtyo wants to borrow trouble needs no collateral.
