There were no fewer than 921 applications for the vacant office of mace bearer to the Hackney (London) Borough Council, while ior the post of his assistant there were nearly 1 00 applications. A large eagle flying over Harfleur, France, having been shot at, fell, and attacked a railway employee. The assistance of three men was required before the man could bo rescued and the eapje killed.
