TAIERI AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY

MEETING AND SOCIAL. At Outram on Monday night a meeting of the committee of tho Taieri Agricultural Society was held, Mr A. Walker presiding. The Secretary reported on the steps taken regarding ihe registration of the society.—The completion of the arrangements was deferred till the annual meeting. At the last meeting the question had been raised as to what should be the age limit for children gaining admission to the show on a member’s ticket. —This was further discussed, but as the mover of the motion was mot in attendance the matter was held over till a future ingThe Secretary submitted a of the finances of the recent show's, making comparisons with the previous year. The receipts had amounted to £545 9s 2d, compared with £422 18s 2d for 1923, while the expenditure had totalled £353 10s 10d, compared with £355 3s for 1923. The -net profit for the .year had been £134 3s 2d. The figures, he stated, were a record for the society.—The Chairman referred to tho very successful financial result of the show, and remarked that a very creditable balance-sheet and report would be placed before members at the annual meeting. He paid a tribute to the secretary (Mr Williamson), to whose energies much of the success was due. An adjournment was then made to the interior of the hall, where wives and lady friends joined Hie committee, and a couple of pleasant social hours were spent. The President briefly welcomed those assembled. Ho said it w'as the first social evening of tho kind held by the society, and he thanked the ladies for their presence. He expressed the hope that many similar meetings would be held, as they would tend to foster interest in the society. (Applause.) The loyal toast having been honored, the health of “ The- Taieri Agricultural Society ” was proposed and drunk with musical honors. The President, in responding, paid a high tribute to the committee which had carried out the. years work. The progress being made would end in their one day holding a “ royal show at Outram. (Laughter.) He wished the vice-president every success in tho 1925 show. (Applause.) Mr James A.' Wilson proposed the health of the president, who, in reply, expressed his pleasure at being associated with shows for twenty six years, seventeen of which bad been on the Taieri, and at each of the twenty-six shows he had been- an exhibitor. Mr W. Nicho! proposed tho toast ol “Tho Life Members,” and this was responded to by Messrs Arthur Johnson and John Sutherland. The cups won at the recent show were then presented. Air James Dow wpu outright Messrs Thomson and Co.’s silver ciq> that has been in competition since 1917. and during its handing over the health of Air and Airs Dow was drunk. Aliss Sinclair (Berwick) was asked to take into her keeping for the year a handsome salad bowl as the prize for most (points in dairy produce and cookery'. This trophy has to bo won several times in succession before it becomes the property of the prize-winner. Aliss Sinclair’s health was also drunk with musical honors. Air Johnson replied on behalf of Miss Sinclair, and Air Dow on behalf of Airs Dow. The next- cup presented was given by' Air R. Treaty, and won by Messrs Thomson and Co. for best yearling (illy bred by exhibitor. The donor s health and that of Aliss Trcacy was toasted. Air Dow' was asked, to icceixc two more cups to hold for this year—one presented by the Waitaki Dairy' Company for the best pure-bred cow at Hie show, and the oilier presented for best crossbred cow’ or heifer by the local dairy factories. Air Treaty acknowledged the hearty' manner in which the company had honored the toast of Aliss Treaey and himself. Ho urged the breeding of good draughts in the district, and said lie had the encouragement- in mind when he had presented the cup. The vice-president (Mr Williamson) presented the Concert Committee's cup t-o the Messrs ANalkoi, which thev had won in the pony competitions. Aliss Walker acknowledged the prize.
