The Hon. W. Downie Stewart (Minister of Customs), accompanied by his private secretary (Mr L. K. Johnson), arrived in Dunedin from the north last evening. To-day the Minister conferred with the chairman of directors of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition Company (Mr J Sutherland Ross) and the manager of tho Exhibition (Mr (J. P. Hainsworlh). Air Stewart will leave for Wellington tomorrow. and, after visiting various parts of the North Island, hopes to return to Dunedin at the end of tho month or early in February. , , . Mr Andrew MncKcnzie, who has been spending a -holiday with old friends at Queenstown, left Dunedin for Wellington this morning. .. _ , .Mr N. B. Lusk, the Dunedin Jockey Club handicapper, waited for the race meetings in Southland, and started tor Auckland to-day. Ex-senior-sergeant Ryan wont through to-day from Invercargill to Christchurch. The Grand Hotel guest book contains the following new names; —Mrs Swaney and Mr and Mrs and Miss PaUiser (Timavu), Miss Ogstou (London), Air and Master M'Kcnzie (Wellington), Mr and Airs J. Air James Here, who died at his residence, Bay View road, on Friday last, at the age of eighty-two, was one of the band of adventurers who sought fortune on the Otago goldfields in the early days. Arriving in Dunedin from Cornwall in the wellknown ship Jessie Roadman in 1865 ; he went straight to the Hamilton’s diggings, where he was fairly successful. He returned to his native land a few years later, and was engaged in farming for some time. Then he decided to come out to New Zealand again, and for some years he was occupied in mining operations at Naseby. In 1878, when land became available, he went fanning on the Alaniototo Plain, and carried on through the difficult years of low prices and bad seasons. Ultimately, with an enlarged holding, Air Hore achieved success, and in 1911 he was able to retire and live in Dunedin, where be has resided ever since. He is survived by Mrs Hore and seven daughters and two sons, all of whom are married. The late Mr Hore, who had a kindly and genial manner, was much respected. He was one of a family of fifteen, one of his brothers being Mr Silas Hore, formerly of Waipiataj but now of Christchurch,'
