Geranium returned to Sydney on the morning of December 13. after a. surveying cruise along Ihe Great Barrier Reef. The cruise occupied six months, and during Ihe interim splendid work was done by the ship's company. By soundings from the ship and by seaplane surveys the Geranium covered about 809 square miles between Townsville and Cairns, discovered several uncharted rocks, and incidentally collected hundreds of fish, sea snakes, crabs, coral, and many other interesting marine specimens. Officers of the ship staled that the. Geranium herself covered about 400 square utiles in lines 400 yards apart, taking soundings at every ship's length, and the seaplane did the rest. Them is no passage, for ships across the Great Barrier between Townsville and Gairns. This was proved by observations taken by Commander Bennett, of the Geranium. The reel's are too close and dangerous, and the Geranium, in the eottr.se of her survey work, narrowly escaped grounding. Once she actually scraped on the coral, but no damage was done. The water along the Barrier was found to bo. infested with sharks. One was estimated to he 30ft it? length. We measured him with Hie ship’s boat as be came alongside," remarked one of the ship's officers. THE ZEALANDIC. The Shaw.
