The City of Singapore, it will be remembered, caught lire on April 26 last while docked at No. 2 quay, Port Adelaide. She was from New fork via Sydney and Melbourne with a cargo of motor cars and benzine. At first it was thought that the fire and subsequent explosions, which cost the lives of several firemen of the metropolitan fire brigades and caused injuries to many others, had occurred among the benzine, and that the bulk oil in the deep tank amidships had been blown up; but subsequent official -inquiries pointed to spontaneous combustion among the coal. The steamer City of Singapore is a now vessel, having been launched as recently as March last year hy William Gray and Co., of West Hartlepool. The vessel registers 6,567 tons gross and 4,169 tons net. •> * CANADIAN CONSTRUCTOR TO LOAD. At a meeting of the Brisbane Marine Board on December 16 Captain Forrester, shipping inspector, furnished a report on the circumstances attending the collision of the steamer Piako with Pinkenba railway wharf on December 5. Captain Forrester expressed the view that the accident was caused by a failure, of the steering engine to work at a critical moment. Ho considered that all possible means were promptly taken under the circumstances to prevent a collision. No blame could bo attached to the master or pilot. AUCKLAND HARBOR DUES. The Auckland Harbor Board intends to take steps to prevent vessels evading the payment of port dues by discharging outside the harbor limits. This will be effected by making the port limits and the harbor limits the same. At present the port limits, fixed by the Customs regulations, are different from the harbor limits, fixed by Order in Council, being more extensive. The eastern port limit runs from Homo Bay, Molutapu, to the north-west, point of Waihekc, and the harbor limits to the south-west. By extending the harbor limits no vessel will be able to ho cleared by the Customs without, coming into the harbor, and therefore incurring the dues. An Order in Council will be necessary to give c feet to the board’s decision. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. AUCKLAND, ’anuary 3.—Arrived : Sydney (7.15 p. i.), from Bunbury.
