When the sailing time .arrived it was discovered that five firemen were absent without leave, and the vessel’s sailing was postponed till Wednesday. THE SHIPPING BUREAU. SYDNEY, December 16. The members of the Shipping Labor Bureau decided to send a deputation to the Cabinet to ask for an assurance that the Government will stand behind them in their fight for the retention of preference on the waterfront. SIR G. FULLER’S ASSURANCE. SYDNEY, December 16. (Receded December 17, at 1.20 a.m.) In the Assembly Sir George Fuller stated that, ho regretted that the Shipping Labor Bureau was to disappear, but he said he would see that preference under the Act was granted to returned sailor and soldier wharf laborers. The secretary of the Returned Sailor and Soldier Wharf'Laborers’ Union stated that legal proceedings would be taken against companies that refused to give the bureau members preference. SETTLEMENT AT PERTH. PERTH, Dccembe 17. (Received December 17, at 9.50 a.m.) At the conclusion of a'meeting of seamen it was announced that a settlement had been reached in regard to the local strike. In some instances the tug employees receive increases of £2 a week.
