NORTH-EAST HARBOR NOTES
[From Oxju Correspondent.] The second annual meeting of the Swimming Club was hold in the hall on Wednesday evening last, there being a good attendance of ladies and gentlemen. In tho unavoidable absence of the president, Mr Gregory was voted to the chair. The annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The total receipts (including balance from last year, £3 19s 8d) were £23 19s 2d, and the expenditure ADS 10s Bd, leaving a credit balance of £4 !M 6d. The report, inter alia, stated that the erection of tho dressing sheds Had been fully justified, and the facilities afforded had been greatly appreciated by the largo number of residents and visitors who bad made use of them. The committee recognised tho necessity of further improvements, and with this end in view it recommended that a small annual subscription be charged. The thanks of the committee were due to all those who had contributed to the successful season, and it was anticipated that the present season would be even more successful. The following office-bearers were elected : President, Mr IT, Luke; vice-president, Mr S. Ingram; secretary and treasurer, Mr Gregory ; auditor, Mr R. Free; General Committee—Messrs Benton, -S. Brown, Churchill, C. Free, J. Niven, YV. Rowlands; Ladies’ Committee—Mesdames Brown, Churchill, Free, Gardner, Ingram, KelTett, Luke, Riddell, and Miss Benton. It was resolved that the subscription be 2s 6d for seniors and Is for juniors (under eighteen years). It was decided that the opening day be on Saturday, the 20th inst., and that the carnival be held on Saturday, January 24. The _ matter of affiliation with the Otago Swimming Association was left in the hands o! tho committee to deal with. There was quite a largo and interested gathering* of visitors and residents at R'Owlands’s tea rooms on Saturday afternoon, when a demonstration of booking by means of a kerosene cooker was given. Quito a variety of edibles was turned out, and tho result from tho housewife’s point of view was quite satisfactory. Airs Gillauders attended to the conking, and Mr M’Donald demonstrated the cooker. Afternoon tea was partaken of by those present. For some considerable time past Die busy bees have been working with the object of holding a bazaar to raise, funds for tho Maori missions. This function eventuated mi Friday night, when there was a good attendance of parents and iriends to view, and incidentally to purchase, the various goods provided. There were several stalls erected, on which was displayed for sale quite an array of useful articles— produce, sweets, _ etc. — practically all of which had been disposed of by closing time. Mr Colin Macandrew, in a short speech, declared the sale open, Mr Luke also making a few remarks. A short musical programme was provided, included in which was a playlet _ entitled ‘ Tlie Lost Child ’; while the girl stallholders collectively gave appropriate recitations descriptive of their various stalls. A number of the boys, under the leadership of -Mi* C. G. Hook, gave a Maori haka in good style. The sale proved quite a successful affair, dose on £2O being raised for the work. The Glee Club gave its final concert for this year in tho hall on .Saturday 11 -■* t. when there was a large and approdative audience present. Tho club has been working on a number of new pieces since its last concert, and several of these were included in the programme. Needless to say, they were well rendered and well received, particularly ‘ Old Mother Hubbard,’ a second rendering of which had to be given. The supporting vocalists all had to respond to encores, Air Le Gal having to come back a third time for his fine playing on the violin. To show their appreciation of the good work done by Air Desmoulins as conductor, and Mrs Desmoulins as pianist, tho members took the opportunity ot presenting them with a silver-mounted ebony baton and a piece of Doultoinvare respectively. Air Luke (president) made the presentation, and in doing so referred to the good feeling that existed between the members and. the recipients. Air Desmoulins, who was completely taken by surprise, acknowledged the gifts in a happy speech. The contributions by the club were Elgar’s ‘The Snow,’ ‘Golden Slumbers,’ 1 Old Alother Hubbard,’ 1 Sweet and Low, 1 Beauteous Night ’ (duet by Airs Astloy Black and Alisa Nikaudcr), ‘ Carry Ale ‘Back to Old Virginny,’ ‘ Adesle Fideles,’ ‘ The Long Day Closes.’ _ The supporting soloists were Mrs Davidson, Miss Ross, Ah* Stewart (songs), Miss Jefferson (recitation], Ah* Lo Gal (violin). Supper was handed round, after which a couple of hours’ darning was indulged in. The vacancy in the local circuit of the Presbyterian Church caused by the resignation of the Rev. Mr A!‘Donald was filled last Tuesday, when the induction of the Rev. W. W.‘ M’Arlhur was solemnised in the Pukehiki Church. Mr M‘Arthur is being tendered a welcome social in the Alacandrew’s Bay Church on Triday evening next. The monthly meeting of the Boating Club Committee was held in the boat shod on Wednesday evening last, there being present Commodore E. G. Aloller (in the chair), Messrs S. Brown, Connack, Free, Grigg,' If. Maramlrew, Marrett, and Riddell (secretary). Messrs C. T. Sundslrum and F. B. Francis were elected members of the dub. Messrs S. Brown and Riddell were appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing term. It was decided to hold a procession of decorated boats on Monday, December 29, at £>.3o p.m., all sizes of boats being eligible to compete; and for the contest tho picigos were appointed. Amounts amounring to £6 6s 4d were passed for Owing to the intervention of tho ho’'days and the regatta, if was resolved that tho next meeting be, held in the fust week in February. A meeting of the Regatta Committee was held in the boat shed on Sunn day evening, and was attended by Co'v.modrre Aloller. Messrs* Bewley, S. Brown, Churchill, Connack. Grant, Grigg, Hill, Kcllett, Lamb, Niven, Rattray, Riddell, and Thomson. It was stated that the PortoUePo Hoad Board had decided that no motors be parked on the road between tho wharf and the muddy, but that they he parked in District road and Marion street. It was resolved that the finishing line for the rowing events be between the end of the wharf and the beacon opposite, and it was mentioned that entries for these events were expected from Timaru, Oamaru, and Bluff. Particular attention was drawn to tho closing of entries ior tne yaciil and motor boat events on Wednesday, 17th met., at 5 p.m. It was mentioned that all arrangements for fi.f. reo’f.M!) were well in hand, and that the donations were coming in freely. Mr Easton was thanked for his donation of drums for turning buoys for the course, Tho next concert, in aid _of funds for the recatta, will be held in the hall on Saturday night. The Methodist Sunday School social will be held in the hall in Friday evening, when the distribution of prizes will take place. A programme of musical items will be given by the children, and supper will be handed round.
