HEW ZEALAND HEALTH METHODS
HIGH PRAISE. [Peb United Dress Association.] AUCKLAND, December 8. The methods followed by the Public Health authorities in great centres of Great Britain and the United States were closely investigated l by Dr .1. Cumpston, Chief Health Officer for the Commonwealth of Australia, who arrived by the Niagara. Ur Cumpston also visited Paris, where he attended an international conference of Government health officers, the chief business of which was to revise the quaran-tine-systems of the countries represented. Dr Cumpston said that he had not seen anywhere any system as good as that of the dentrd control of school children in force in New Zealand. Ho was of the opinion that the Plunket system operating in the dominion was better organised and controlled and more widely distributed than anything ho had seen in the United Slates. ‘The New Zealand system was far ahead of anything that had come under his observation. While there were some things in the public health administration in the United States which could with benefit ho adopted in these southern countries, and there were certain phases of the administration of the health of tho people which suggested modification of the system in operation in Australia, the average prosperity, education, and happiness of the people of New Zealand and Australia made many of the -drastic methods in force in American communities quite unnecessary here. Dr Cumpston, who is accompanied by Mrs Cumpston, will spend, same weeks in New Zealand before going on to Australia, and will take the opportunity of conferring with tho Director-General of Health (Dr T. 11. A. Valintine) and bis staff in order to bring himself up to date on tho methods employed in New Zealand.
