GLOAMING IN AUSTRALIA.

SYDNEY AND MELBOURNE ' EARNINGS Gloaming lias an excellent Australian record, notwithstanding that in three different seasons he was unable, to race in Sydney owing to something going amiss with him after arrival (says ‘‘Pilot" in the Svdney ‘ Referee’). He has won over £40.C00 in Australia and New Zealand, but if all had gone well with him on each of his trips from the dominion it might easily have been nearer £50,000. The smallest amount he earned in any season in which he ran in Australia was ,£2.182, and the greatest £5,794, this year. The ages at which ho did not run here, were five, six, and eight. In Sydney Gloaming has won £10,652 and in Melbourne £1,125. His total is consequently £16,775, and of this Mr G. D. Greenwood lias received £16,200, the remaining £525 going to Mr E. E. TL Clarke in breeders’ premiums. Gloaming has started in thirteen races in Australia for eight firsts and five seconds, the horses defeating him being Poitrel, Boanford (twice), ’ Heroic, and Ballymena. As Gloaming returned to New Zealand seemingly quite as well as when he raced hero two years ago, he may still further add to his record in Sydney and Melbourne. At present it is as under: —At Three Years.— First Tatt.’s Chelmsford Stakes ... £687 First A.J.G. Derby (inclusive of £250 to breeder) 4,724 —At Four Years. — First Rosehill Spring Stakes 261 Second A.J.G. Spring Stakes 400 First Craven Plate -• 1,521 —At Seven Years.— Second Tatt.’s Chelmsford Stakes ... 200 First' Rosehill Hill Stakes 474 Second A.J.C. Spring Stakes 500 First A.J.C. Craven Plate 2,214 —At Nine Years. — Second Tatt.’s Chelmsford Stakes ... 200 Second Rosehill Hill Stakes 150 First A.J.C. Spring Stakes (inclusive of £125 to breeder) 1,967 A.J.C. Craven Plate (inclusive of £l5O to breeder) 2,554 First Y.R.C. Melbourne Slakes ... 1,125 Total £16,775 In the past. Gloaming has done all his Australian racing in the spring, but next year an autumn trip is possible. His trainer, R. J. Mason, in reply to my query as to whether the gelding would race at Auckland about the end of this year, replied : “Thrit has not yet been decided. It greatly depends upon how he is after he gets home,” Relative to the likelihood of a trip to Sydney in the autumn, he said : “As the two-year-olds Nincompoop and Chignon are likely to comp over*, the chances are Gloaming will accompany them. Mr Greenwood likes racing in Australia. ’’ If Gloaming should come to Sydney in the autumn, w.f.a. races in which he could run, and at distances at which he has already won, are the Rosehill Rawson Stakes, nine furlongs; A.J.C, Autumn Stakes, one mile, and a-half; and All-aged Stakes, one mile. The two last-mentioned races are so valuable that they alone would justify the trip.
