GIRL’S MANOEUVRE DEFEATED. [Per United Pnrss Association.] AUCKLAND, December 4. In the Police Court Ethel May deques was charged with having attempted to obtain from Alexander Boyd £2O by 'alscly representing tn him that, sho was in a certain condition. Detective Walder gave evidence that, as a result, of a. complaint, hy Boyd, he, made investigations. Boyd was a single, innn. On November 3 accused was engaged by Rnvd as housekeeper. A week later she became engaged to Boyd. It. was arranged that the, wedding take place a fortnight Inter. Accused asked for various mins of money, and was given a, cheque for £25, and a, further sum of £2O. Accused later (old Boyd that she would not many him unless he settled a sum of money on her, Boyd made it will in the woman’s favor, his estate being £1,600. Out of tho £75 received she had spent £25 on a ring, and the Imlance on furnishings for the. house. She left his cmnicy on November 19, and later told him -ho was in a ccrtairi condition, and demanded £2O. At the detective's suggestion Boyd replied to tho letter, and a meeting was arranged, when a male friend of accused kept the Appointment, and the money was not paid over. Accused pleaded guilty. Mr Povnton. S.M., admitted her to probation for three years, adding that she would have to keep away from her male friend.
