SCOUT NOTES

[By Swastika.] ill communications to he addressed to “ Swastika,” ‘ Star ’ Office, before 12 o'clock on Mondays. On Tuesday even in" the quarterly meeting of the local association was held in tins V.M.C.A. rooms. -Mr M. L. lapley (president) occupied the chair. '.I he meetin" was largely attended, and the newlyappointed Commissioner (.Mr \V. F. Meek) was initiated as a member of the great Scout brotherhood. Mr T. 11. Sargood presented Mr -Meek with his warrant* as Commissioner, and in so doing conveyed to him the wishes and congratulations of His Kxccllcncy the Govcrnor-C.cnenil (Chief Scout of the dominion), a.nd also the greetings of the Dominion Council. Commissioner Meek suitably responded to the many congratulations amidst applause. Quarterly reports were submitted by the district officers and adopted. Sunday morning, November 23, was a red-letter day in connection with the Anderson Bay Troop. The combined troops of Anderson Bay and Ocean Beach paraded at (he quarry, and inarched to music supplied by their brother Scouts from Roslyn and North Dunedin, and proceeded to' the Presbyterian Church to dedicate the troop colors donated by Messrs \V. F. -Meek and T. Somerville. These were dedicated by Chaplain Rev. U. H. Jupp in a fitting and impressive manner. At the conclusion of the ceremony the parade formed up and marched to the Anderson Bay School grounds for the purpose of having photos taken. Here the Scouts greeted their new Commissioner with tlio haka, and Mr J. C. H. Somerville (chairman of the Bay Troop) thanked (ho visiting Scooters and Scouts for corning such a distance to make the parade a success.

The D.S.M. thanks all Scoutcrs and Scouts who turned out to the rehearsals and parade for tlio torchlight marching given at tho Artillciy Band’s display held last week.

Last Monday night the Leith Troop held its usual parade. -After inspection the troop was divided into two sections—one under Seontcr Staples to learn second class work, and the other under Scouter Morris to learn the tenderfoot tests. Games were played. Following the Scout promise the parade was dismissed. On Saturday afternoon games were played at St. Kilda Beach.

A competition, one of a scries for the interpatrol competition honors roll, was held by the- Mornington Troop last Saturday evening. The subject taken was four knots of the tenderfoot range, points being given for time and correctness. Scouter Holdenioss conducted the, tests, Assistant Scouter Brown being timekeeper. The knots having to be done behind the back caused the most points to he Inst for time, and in a few cases for correctness. Some of the older members■ had evidently not kept up their practice in this particular method. The following members of the troop gained over 90 per cent. -Scouts J. Wilson 99, Benfield 94|, Brosnan 91. The attendance and dress competition has been going for .some time,, but more stringent tests are now being made. Kexi Saturday a. full muster is looked for, when another test will be conducted. In the afternoon a, treasure hunt will be given, Scouts meeting at tho Scontcr's residence at 2.30 (weather permitting). As this will bo the only one before llio holidays, the Scouters trust that ns many as possible! will parade. Ocean Reach Wolf Cub Pack met. on Monday evening in P>eid Hall. Scouter Moore,’ who had charge, instructed the boys in signalling, and supervised the six work. Later Cubber Dorman took over the pack, and divided them into two sections. Tim pack is now about fifty strong, and consists of senior and junior sections. Games were played before dismissal. Next .Monday evening three Cubs will be promoted "into the Scout troop. It is hoped that the boys’ parents will be present to yUness the’ I ' going-ugT ceremony.
