HOUSES FOR SOLDIERS.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,—Having had some experience in this direction, I am in a position to speak from first-hand knowledge. On my return from the front I decided to lake advantage of the facilities afforded under the Discharged Soldiers’ Settlement Act, and after giving the necessary assurance that I required a house for my own use I was granted a loan. Some time later my health broke down owing to war disabilities. and I was admitted to hospital, where I remained for eighteen months, and was discharged only on condition that 1 took up residence on the hill, which necessitated my selling the house on which I had the loan. The sale, however, was held up by the Land Board because 1 was asking a price which, while not allowing any margin of profit, was just sufficient to cover improvements, and not until I had supplied ,a written statement of the improvements in question was the transfer passed by the board. So much for Mr Massey’s allegations of .profiteering. On leaving hospital I bought a house ou the hill, but not being eligible for a second soldier’s loan, I applied during September, 1925, for a loan under the Advances to Workers Act, and although my sole income is my military pension, repeated inquiries have so far failed to bring forth any information as to whether my application is being considered or not. Patience is truly a virtue. It would seem that unless a subject is in direct relation to the primary products of the country it is not of sufficient importance to be considered by our present Government.—l am, etc., Disabled.
