THE CHERNIAVSKYS

LAST CONCERT TO-NIGHT. The Dunedin public is not backward in asking for more of entertainment that pleases it, and the Cherniavsky brothers had to make several additions to the strong programme submitted in the Bums Hall last night. But they did not appear to mind, realising, doubtless, that the encores were, after all, compliments. A trio by Tschaikowsky opened the concert, and it was interpreted with such success that tlie brothers had to return. Glinka’s ‘Russian Romance’ and ‘Spring iSong’ .(Mendelssohn) also 'Called forth beautiful harmony from the artists in combination. All the solos were given -with the fluent artistry that one has learned to expect from each member of the trio, but special mention must be made of Jan’s interpretation of the ‘Sonata in B Major' (Beethoven). This was not a programme number, being given by special request, and the pianist certainly worked his audience to a rare state of enthusiasm with this severe test. It was noticeable that the sonata was played right through from memory. Miscbel and Loo Cherniavsky were responsible for some musicianly 'cello and violin solos respectively, the former’s numbers being ' Sonata ’ (Samartini) and ‘ Taranf olio ’ (Popper). With his violin Leo gave expression to the beauties of ‘ Polonaise’ (Vieuxtemps), ‘Variations’ (Correlli), and ‘Romance’ (Beethoven) in a way that was memorable. Tho Chcrniavskys will conclude their Dunedin season to-night.
