FIRES
WUULSTOR TANNERIES. TWO DEPARTMENTS DESTROYED. [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, August ,19. A fire to-night destroyed the follmongery shed and the tail hark shed at the Woolston Tanneries. This was the third lire there this year, the previous outbreaks being in January and April. Large quantities of glucose, oil, skins, wool, and other commodities wore lost. 'The only parts of the huge premises that have now mt been touched by fire are tbo glove and hide departments. Since the previous outbreaks the existing buildings have been used for storage purposes, and at present it is not possible to say accurately what has been destroyed. The total insurance involved is £SS,CCO with the London and Lancashire Company. This sum is largely reinsured,,. NARROW ESCAPE. (Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 19. Mr and Mrs Jackson, an aged couple, had a narrow escape from being burnt alive in a fire at Eastbourne. The lire started near the oil stove, and the house was quickly’ in flames. Assistance came, and Mr Jackson, who was bedridden, had to be rescued through the window. AT AN AWKWARD MOMENT. (Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, August 20. While nearly all the available firemen were engaged at the Woolston fire an outbreak was discovered in Ridley’s Building of three stories at the corner of Lichfield and Manchester streets. The fire at one stage threatened the destruction of the building., but was subdued after wreaking several hundred pounds of damage to the slock of various tenants.
