FIFTH CRICKET TEST

SOUTH AFRIGA SCORES 342.

CATTERALL AGAIN BATS WELL.

LONDON, August 16. In tho fifth test match the South Africans in their first innings made 342. Stumps were ' then drawn. The weather was fine and cloudy, and the wicket was good. The attendance was 16,000. The South Africans won the toss and batted, playing the same side as in the last test, except that Hearno, replaced Hand. England omitted Kilner. The slart was disastrous, two wickets falling for seven. Hearne was run out as tho result of a magnificent return by Hobbs. Snsskind and Nouree made a splendid recovery. Susskind took no liberties, and this caused the crowd to barrack him. Catterall’s play was attractive, and it was his best innings of tho tost series. His 95 was scored in 120 minutes, whereas Susskind took 223 minutes. The English fielding was of the highest standard. Hobbs, Sandham, and Hendren were magnificent. The howling -was changed continually, and was better than the score suggests, though Howell was patchy. Nevertheless a steady, continuous attack was set up. Strudwick was a masterpiece behind tho sticks, allowing only one bye, which went for four, in the whole innings, which lasted 342 minutes. Details t South Africa. First Innings.
