HARRIERS

Twenty members of the Pacific Club journeyed to the Provincial Hotel; Port Chalmers, where an enjoyable run was hold in glorious weather. The trail led up the hill to the railway line, which was followed north for over a mile. Then making across country, the pack, which appreciated the glonous view obtained from these heights, journeyed on down hill until Deborah Bay was reached, and a steady pace was then sot for home, terminating in a good sprint, in which new blood snowed their abilities. After the run the club sat down to tea as the guests of its committee, with the usual sing-song afterwards. Billy Hobbs was absent from the pack, being one of the Otago team running at Wellington. The Anglican Club held its run from the Port Chalmers School. Twenty runners sot out at 3.15 in charge of Deputy-captain Mount. Paper being dispensed with, the pack ran along the Main road as far as Sawyers Bay, then cut back and ran across the hills to Mihiwaka. The pack then came down the hills on to the low road, and a fast ran homo ensued, the pack finishing in a very close order. Next Saturday the club will break away from the usual run, and a bicycle outing will take place from the Y.M.C.A.

Caversham dub held its run from the Anderson Bay School, all tho crack members of tho club turning out. Mills and Hehberd set out with the paper, and led a trail past the Shiel Hill Hotel and on up to tho Cairn at Highclilf, and then down the other side along through tho lupines to Tomahawk. From there the trail followed tho road up past the cemetery, past the tram terminus, and up the hill to the school. From the cemetery gate a fast run was commenced- Tho first men home were Hetberington, A. Frye, Emmerson, and Anderson, closely followed by Heaton, Pope, Murdock, and Gibbs. Next week a oue-railo road race for this season’s novices will bo held from Mrs Beatson’s residence at Wingatui. Tho Anglican Ladies’ Club held its ran from tho High Street School. Tho pack, numbering twelve, in charge of Deputynptain Harbutt, left the school at 3.15 and ran along the drive and through Meadow street into Hawthorn avenue, then down Mill road and across the paddocks and over Bound Hill to Silverstream, and along the District to Calloway street, thence across Oakley’s, on across tho Belt, and down into High street, and along to the school. A fast run home resulted: E. Stokes, S. Stokes, E. Sell, and M. Wright, the remainder being close up. St. Patrick’s Club held its mile handicap at Porbary Park under ideal weather conditions. Twelve runners faced the starter, Mr E. Ryall. Tho limit men, Menhenick and Hulands, made a good pace, and the order past the judges’ box tho first time round was Menhenick and Hulands together, with Liston about 50yds back, and the remainder running strongly. Going into the back straight tho limit men maintained their position, with Bradley, M‘Allen, and Fitzgerald following. Entering the straight tho limit men still hold their lead, with M‘Allen and White cracking on the pace: but tho lead was too great, and Menhenick and Hulands breasted the tape together. Tho race resulted:—Menheuick and Hulands (dead heat) 1, White 2, M'Allen 3. St. Hilda held its' weekly run from the residence of Mr and Mrs G. Gibbs, Brownvillo crescent, Maori Hill, Tho pack, numbering some twenty members, under tho whistle of Captain Macdonald, followed an excellent trail up tho Leith Valley, striking tho road just above Davidson’s saw-mill. After following tho road for a little the trail branched oft on to the track leading to tho reservoir. From here tho loaders cracked on tho pace, and before the pack readied tho Bnlmacewen Golf Links it was fairly well strung out. Throughout the whole trail A. Macdonald, P. Skene, D. Skene, L. J. Dove, and T. W. Dove were prominent. In the final sprint for homo C. Wills, L. Dove, T. W. Dove, P. Skene, D. Skene, R. Mercer, and L. Henderson had a great light for first place. After tea some twenty-five harriers and lady friends enjoyed a splendid evening with their host and hostess. Civil Service held its Ono-milo Postal Cup Handicap Race a.t Forbury Park. A field of eighteen faced the starter (Mr A. Melville), who got them away in good style. In the absence of Eddio_ Brown, who was away competing in the New Zealand Cross-country Championship at _ Wellington, A. Louie, on 80yds, was virtual scratch. The limit men, Jackson and Henderson, on 190yds, set oil at a brisk pace, with Herman, on 160yds, running strongly. : At tho half-mile, Herman took tho lead,! with the back-markers closing up. Going * down the back straight Herman, was still leading, with Stevens, Burke, Melville, Graham, and Matheson closely bunched. Prior to entering tho homo straight Stevens, who was running strongly, took the lead, and in a well-ma.mta.inod sprint came in a winner by 15yds from Matheson, who just beat Graham for second place. Melville, Byds away, was fourth, and Burke, leading' tho remainder of the field, was close up. At. tho conclusion of tho race tho members were entertained at tho Majestic Mansions, St. Clair, by Jlr A. Melville, vice-president. A telegram was despatched to Wellington congratulating tho Otago team on its splendid win in the championship. Cargill road Methodist held its run ■from the Roslyu Schoolroom. The pack took the trail towards the Halfway Bush sub-station, and on towards an empty paddoow, where a sterling game of Rugby football was indulged in. After some hard and fast play the pack trailed homewards, a very fast run being enjoyed, and some , of the younger members being well up at the finish.
