SPORTING

GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. CONCLUDING DAY. INCREASED “TOTE” RETURNS. ISpkCIAL TO THEE ‘ STAR.’] CHRISTCHURCH, August 16. The weather was fine and sunny up till after the fifth rare for the concluding day of fiho National Carnival at Riccarton, and then became cloudy. The attendance was very largo, showing the popularity of the jumping sport. The going was good and the racing interesting. Wassail showed what a good horso he is by carrying lOafc 61b in the Hoathcoto Handicap, and winning_ in Imin 28sec —a great performance, considering the going. Captain Sarto was prominent in the Sydenham Hurdles for nearly a mile and a-half' bub failed to stay on. Tinokaha tried to win all the way, but Nukumai headed him soon after jumping the second of the last hurdles, when Vagabond challenged Nukumai at tho last hurdle. The latter hit it, but Vagabond had his measure, and it looks that if Mr Kemble’s representative had been closer up in the early stages'of the National Hurdles he might have won. Boomerday stopped badly after going a mile. Though Santiago was kept close up in tho early stages, ho could not reach the placed horses at the finish. Omahu went a good race, moving in or about third place all the way. In tho Styx Hurdles Adjutor did not appear to be able to foot it with the leaders in the early stages, but looked to have a ch.anco at the homo turn. However, the pace was too solid for him, and, though fourth, ho was some distance behind the placed horses, Radinc, the winner, is a full brother to Wamba, who won several great races. Sturdee, despite being risen 201 b for winning the National, was selected as favorite for the Lincoln Steeplechase, which provided one of the host finishes of the day. Ho was prominent for two miles. Then the weight and the fast pace set by San Forte told its tale, and ho was done with. Oakleigh appeared to land into Galway when ho fell at the sod wall the first time round. Mettle Drift, was interfered with by tho fallen horses, and afterwards fell at the first fence of the kennels’ double, blaster Peter was running well when he toppled over at the second last fence. Passin’ Through waited till the kennels’ double was passed ; then he took charge, and led San Forte and First Line home in one of the best finishes of the meeting. He had a life at the brush fence at tho top of the straight, but after that jumped oven’thing very safely. Wassail gave further proof of his quality by carrying list 21b to victory in the Solwyn Handicap in Imin 14 1-Ssec, and incidentally established a fresh National record by winning a double in one day. His owner's reason for withdrawing him from the Winter Cup was because he lightened up after his arrival at Riccarton, and he would not start him unless he was absolutely fit and well. Details: All started in the Longbeach Higbweight Handicap, 9f, gentlemen riders, and Bultord (Strowan —Dreadnought Links mare, ridden by Air S. Barr) was sent out a good favorite, carrying more than Gluement. Tho others were Bonena, Wapping, Stream, Likelihood, Queen Balboa, Adopted, Sunny Mac, Brown Lady, Pomposa, and Miss Garancc. Adopted was in the lead for a furlong, when Bultord took charge, followed by Adopted, Sunny Mac, and Gluement. Five furlongs from home Gluement joined Bnlford in the lead. They were well clear of Wapping and Bonena. On entering the straight Bulford drew away at the distance, and won easily by two lengths. Gluement was a similar distance away from Bonena, with Wapping and Likelihood next. Time, 2min 0 2-ssec. Totalisator investments, £4,341^. All started in tho Aylesbury Steeplechase (about 2im), and Charlatan was sent out favorite, with Paul Pry (St. Paul— Courier, ridden by J. R. Kaan) the only other well backed. The others were Blue Hall, Sherlock, Kovno, Red Sol, and Blue Streak. Red Sol and Sherlock led tho favorite to the sod wall, which tho latter Hit very hard, and lost twenty lengths. Blue Hall fell at tho first of tho kennels’ double, and Red Sol at tho fence at the top of tho straight. Sherlock, Paul Pry, and Blue Streak led Charlatan over the stand double, and after jumping Cutts’s Charlatan closed up to Sherlock and Paul Pry, who was being ridden hard. At the kennels’ double Charlatan jumped to tho front, and led Red Sol to the last fence, where Kovno fell and gave Dawson a nasty spill. In tho run homo Paul Pry carno again and beat Charlatan by three lengths. Sherlock was a length and a-half away. Time, Smin 14 l-sscc. Totalisator investments, £5,507.

All started in the Hoathcoto Handicap (7f), and there was not much to chooso in (.ho betting between Wassail (Elysian— Merry Date, ridden by R. J. Mackie), Yoma, and Broadwood. The others were Happy Warrior, Tussore, Rose of Athens, Guncaso, The Polymnian, Dame Strait, lace, and Proipority. Broadwood and Yoma were tho smartest out, but before going a furlong Wassail had taken charge, and, leading Yoma all the way, won easily by a length and a-half from Yoma. Happy Warrior, who was badly placed throughout, was four lengths away third, just beating Rose of Athens. Tussore was next. Time, Imin 28scc. Totalisator investments, £8,&43i.

Bonibrook led over the first hurdle from Aquola, Radiac, and Adjutor. After jumping the hurdle near Cutts’s Aquola went out and led Demand, Fort Regal, and Bonibi'ook to the far turn, where Bonibrook, who had been jumping badly, dropped back and Radiao closed up. At the second last fenco Aquola was still in charge from Demand and Radiac, and at the last hurdle the former were close together, with Radiac a couple of leaigths away. In a great finish Radiac just got up to beat Demand by a neck. Aquola was a short length away third, the next to finish being Adjutor, Camel Amble, and Bonibrook. Time, 3rain 0 l-ssec. Totalisator investments, £7,336^ A good field of eleven weighed out in the Sydenham Hurdles (2m), and Kukumai was made a better favorite than Santiago, with Boomorday and Vagabond (Martian— Gypsy Girl, rkfficn by H. Burt) almost as well supported. The others were Lo Forte, Omahu, Tinokaha, Manage, Captain Sarto, Penury Rose, and Gamecock. Tinokaha drew out smartly, and headed Boomorday and Omahu over tlic first hurdles. The order was the same avium passing the stand, when Kukumai came up, with Santiago next. At the turn Omahu look second place, but at the mile post the order was: Tinokaha, Kukumai, Le Fort, Santiago, .and Omaha. Racing round the far turn, Tinokaha was just clear of Kukurnai, with Santiago and Le Fort two lengths away, and Vagabond closing up smartly. Vagabond joined Santiago just behind the leading pair as they raced into the straight.. There was not much between the first division at the last hurdle, but Vagabond drew out on the flat, and won by a length and a-half. Nukumai beat Omahu by a short length for second place, with Santiago close up fourth; Le Fort and Tinokaha. next. Time, 3min 45 4-sscc. Totalisator investments, £8,928.

| Zeus was the only withdrawal from the Lincoln Steeplechase (about 3m), and Slurdee was sent out a better favorite than : Oakleigh and Passin’ Through (almost , equally backed), with Master Peter also well backed. The others wore San Forte, Tigerland, Mettle Drift, First Line, Gal- ; way, and Polthoguo. Galway and San t Forte at once went out in front, and led j Sturdee over Cutta’s. This was tho order ; of the loading division to the sod wall ! after tho kennels double, where Galway j fell, and Oakleigh (wh) was ridden by A, I M'Douald, as J. Roach had been hurt when | Royal Flame fell) jumped into him, and both interfered with Mlttle Drift. Passing the stand, Sturdee, wlto had jjunpod him-

self to the front, was leading San Forte, Master Peter, Tigerland, and Passin Through. Going along the back San Forte went with Stnrdee in front to tho kennels double, where tho latter cried enough; and Master Peter, Passin’ Through, and Tigerland went up to San Forte. Tigerland hit tho second last fence hard, and Master Peter fell. Passin’ Through led over the last fence from San Forte, First Line, and Tigerland, and stayed on to win by a bare, length from San Forte, with First Line a head away, Tigerland and Stnrdee next. Time, Smin 57 2-sscc., Totalisator investments, £7,9815Tussore, Knocklyn, and Glument were withdrawn from the Itedclife Handicap (7f), and Rivalry (Antagonist—. Equipment, ridden by F.
