Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., who has been relieving Mr G. Gruickshank, S.M., at Invercargill, returned to Dunedin this morning. Mr Ernest Drake has gone to Auckland. Ho will bo absent for a fortnight. Mr John Stevenson (Invercargill) is in Dunedin on a business visit. Mr Crosby (Morris left for Auckland this morning. Staying at tho Excelsior Hotel are Mr J Collins and Mr J. Ritchie (Auckland), Mr K. Murray (Wellington), Yv. J. Stephenson (Invercargill), Mr W. Sedgebeer and Mr I. Tnnjis (Sydney). Mr Chas. Speight left lor Wellington by to-day’s express. Mr P. Parnell (Christchurch) returned north this morning. New guests at the City Hotel are Mr G. D. Wilson (Mastcrton), Mr S. Holme (Wanganui), W. F. Nartan (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Spencer Edwards (Sydney), Mr J. Reid (Queenstown), Mr A. I!. Elder (Auckland), Mr C. Spain (Earascleugh), and Mr T, Leighton and Mrs J. Stephens (Invercargill).

Archdeacon Fitchett and Mr L. Deans Ritchie came homo by last night’s, train after a very brief visit to Wellington to attend tho meeting of the General Synod’s Standing Committee. Tho bishop did not return with them.

Mr IV. Boulnois has arrived in Dunedin, and is being introduced by Mr Bond as the newly-appointed representative of the New Zealand Shipping Company. News was received at Christchurch yesterday of the death at Palmerston North of cx-Constable J. Gillespie, who had prior to his retirement a few years back Been connected with the Now Zealand Police Force for forty years. Mr Gillespie was in charge of the police affairs for many years at Fox ton, while bis last station was Temuka. On leaving the latter town, Mr Gillespie was entertained by tho residents and made the recipient of many valuable presents as a token of IhcT appreciation of him as an officer of the law and a citizen. On leaving Temuka Mr Gillespie went on to his farm property at Kairanga, which he farmed with considerable success. Ho was a lover of the thoroughbred, and bred Master Strowan, a noted steeplechaser, and Rowan, another useful hurdler? while at present several fine young blood stock are running out on his property. Mrs Gillespie predeceased her husband a few months back. The late Mr Gillespie, who had Just passed his seventieth year, is survived by a grown-up family.—Our Christchurch correspondent. The death occurred this morning of Mr Ohas. W. Wilkinson, -of Harrow street, builder and contractor. Mr Wilkinson lived practically all his life of over sixty years in Dunedin. Ho was well known as an officer and member of tho Methodist Church, Dundas street, having been church secretary for over ten years. His keen interest in temperance led him to become a prominent worker for the Prohibition cause. Visitors at tho Grand Hotel are W. o.' L. Baxter (Auckland), Mr J. T. Tucker and W. L. Beere (Wellington), W. J. Ferguson (Liverpool), Mr E, O. Robins and W. C. Qakey (London), W. N. M’Caul (Wellington), and Mr Adair (Gisborne). Mr G. C. Proudfoot, who has been president of tho Dunedin Defence Rifle Club since 1910, was unanimously _ reelected to that position at the thirty-sixth annual meeting of tho club las nigh. Mr Thos. Wight, who has recently returned from a visit to tho Old Country, is starting for himself in Dunedin as a furnishing specialist. Mrs Chas. H. Browne, a member of the committee of the newly-formed Albany present at the jubilee function in the Early Settlers’ Hall last evening. At the annual meeting of the Dunedin Defence Ribe Club last evening the president (Mr G. C. Proudfoot) referring to the loss the club was suffering through the resignation of its secretary (Mr 14. G. Grayam), who had been transferred to Sydney. He eulogised the services rendered to the club by Mr Graham, and said ho had always proved a popular and enterprising seefetary.
