RELIEVING DISTRESS
COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS’ PREPARATIONS. With the object o£ relieving distress in the city and suburbs the Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association is at present preparing for another of its commendable efforts. Committees and working bees have been formed, and a busy body of collectors are on the warpath for subscriptions and donations of goods. The collectors are meeting with a gratifying response, and this year s effort promises to beat previous records. Last year gifts of cash and goods amounted to £513, and this enabled the association to distribute £l,soo—in other words, to convert each £1 into £3. It has been decided to devote the proceeds as follows: 60 per cent, to the Salvation Army and 20 per cent, each to the Citizens’ Relief Committee and the New Zealand fund in aid of blinded soldiers and sailors. These bodies will distribute the proceeds to deserving cases, and as there is a great deal of distress at the present time every pound secured will be greatly appreciated. The big days will be held on September 19 and 20.
