GOLDEN WEDDING

Old and respected residents of Green Island, in the persons of _Mr _ and Mrs Thomas Campbell, of Victoria place, celebrated their golden wedding on Thursday afternoon (August 14). On account of the recent serious illness of Mrs Campbell, the gathering was limited to the immediate members of the family and the Rev. John and Mrs Kilpatrick. The Eev. David Campbell, of West Taieri (the eldest son), presided, and read congratulatory letters and telegrams from Invercargill, Outram, Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, and Australia, and also from local friends. The toast of the “ Bride and Bridegroom ” was proposed by the Eev John Kilpatrick, who paid a high tribute to the work and worth of the favored couple, and the esteem in which they were held by all. The bridesmaid of fifty years ago (a sister of the bride), in the person of Mrs Jus. Struck, of Otokia, was .present, and her health was duly honored, Mr Struck responding on her behalf. Absent friends were not forgotten, and a special tribute of praise was accorded to Miss Jessie Campbell,, whose faithfulness, loyalty, and devotion to her aged parents was' duly emphasised by Mr Jas. Strack.

Mr and Mrs who were married in Dunfermline, Fifeshire. Scotland, on August 14, 1874, have resided in Green Island for over forty years. Of a family of eleven children, three eons and six daughters are living, and two sons and five daughters were present at the function. There are twenty-one grand, children, some of whom contributed vocal items to the harmony of the gathering. The bridesmaid of fifty years ago was the recipient of a floating flower bowl as a commemorative gift from _ the bridegroom. The old couple received many useful and handsome gifts, five of the grandchildren contributing their gifts in gold.
