DOMAIN BOARD

THE TEAK'S OPERATIONS. The annual meeting of the Ocean Beach Domain Board was held yesterday afternoon, the chairman (Mr j. H. Hancock) presiding. Mr Efcvncock was reappointed chairman, and Mr J. 'Wilson treasurer. The Works Committee was made to consist, of the chairman and Messrs J. W. Dove and W. B, Taverncr.

The annual report, on the operations of the board for the year ended March 31 last was adopted in the following terms:— St. Clair Groynes.—Tho pile groynes at fib. Glair appear to have had the desired effect, and, aided' by the bundles of manuka scrub, are holding tho sand at (he esplanade. The scrub groynes inshore are also rebuilding up against the sandhills. It does not seem necessary to expend the balance of the grant voted for the groynes. Works and Improvements. Levelling opposite tho racecourse has occupied the I'Hrti for some time, with a view to forming either tennis courts or croquet lawns, (here being applicants for both. Tho area will’ require to be covered with day and soil before sowing with grass seed. Fencing where required and repairing fences have been attended to from time to time. Tito ladies’ hockey ground, opposite Prince Albert road, has been heavily top-dressed with material (pried from the Drainage Hoard work on Hay View road. This topdressing should form a good surface for future play. Three hundred and fifty loads of spoil from River street were carted on to tho football ground, liarrowed, rolled, and sown with grass seed. Home levelling has been done to this area, so as to extend the area for future playing grounds. Marram grass planting has been done on the. main protective sandhills from the children’s playground to Lawyer’s Head on all Hire places, and the planks have been taken from, the outer beach to prevent the. formation of irregular mounds against tho sea. Tree planting last, year was a failure, owing to the unusually dry' season. Recommendations. —Trees should ■ be planted where failures have occurred and iu other suitable places. Footpaths should be formed in places to be laid off to make walking easier for the public. As the sand is mostly fixed over the inner area of tho hills, and the danger from fire in the dry season is great, il is not proposed to sow further lupin seed, but to use Knglisb grasses, and, if practical, to get them eaten off with sheep from time to lime. Tho lupins should be cleared off on the south-eastern side of the roadway from Tahuna Park to the domain boundary, and tho footpath formed with material from the quarry in Chisholm Park. Finance. —The revenue for the year, comprising levies on contributing bodies, rent, anti sundry receipts, totalled £996 11s lOd, which, with tho balance brought forward from tlie previous year of £502 8s 3d, brings the total revenue up to £1,499 Os Id. The expenditure amounted to £BSB 6s 3d, leaving a balance to carry forward for the new vear of £640 13s lOd.
