The reason for the popularity of this instrument with Americans, it is said, is due ia the lack of helmsmen in America today who have been brought up under sail. Few inventions are as delightfully simple in their principle as the mechanical steersman, for it is merely a question of setting a certain course by means of a gyroscopic compass, and as .soon as the ship’s head begins to roam outside the limits of error allowed current runs into til,-, i-.lcel rie steering eugiin: and the fault is rectified at one*.
