A trying voyage of 6,000 miles from South America was the recent experience of the Chinese steamer Jang Nam, which arrived at Auckland last week. For a full month the steamer withstood a prolonged scries of gales and hurricanes, and incidentally passed through a couple, of the worst storms that are met with in the Southern Pacific. Un two occasions she was hove-to, but behaved admirably throughout, though this must have been ono of tho severest tests to which she has been put during her twenty years of seagoing experience. Valparaiso, in Chile, was the port of departure from /South America, the steamer being loaded with 5,500 tons, and carrying IS6 passengers, all but a few of whom were holiday-bound lo China. Kormy weather was encountered immediately, and for six days the Ling Nam was laboring and rolling heavily in a high beam pea, the decks being continuously awash. (In the seventh day out the wind changed ’n the north-ii'uili-easi. and brought with it some tcirilic weather. Due exceptlenallv heavy pea on May 2u Hooded the starboard side of tho promenade deck, and found its way into the saloon on the deck below, and into a. number of the first class cabins puualcd on the starboard side of tho shin.

Thus particular sea. swept the whole of (lie starboard side and carried away the iog line that trails out behind the ship to determine her speed. Mith the lug line went tho fittings lo which it was attached, including the clock that records the measurements. For twenty-four hours (lie vessel steamed in the teeth of this gale, doing little more on occasions than to make steerage way. At noon on the 29th there were signs of an' improvement, but tho vessel continued to pitch and loss heavily in a mountainous sea. Heavy tropical rain set in on June 1, and 'the barometer dropped quickly to n minimum of 29.23 in while the deluge lasted. This cleared the .almnaphero. and a spell of lour days’ fair weather brought the steamer to Tahiti.

THE MAUIA. The shaw. Savill and Albion steamer Malna completed cargo operations and left Aucklaml on June 18 for Opua to load a quantity of frozen meat. From Opua the vi'p'i'l proceeds to Lvtteltnn to complete loading. She will complete loading at Bluff and Wellington. She is due at the lastnamed port on July 11, and six days later is to sail for London via Montevideo, and Tcncriffo. VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL.
