RAILWAY OFFICERS
CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON,
[Pee Dotted Press Association.] WELLINGTON, June 23. At the annual conference of tho Railway Officers’ Institute it was decided again to press for tho sotting up of a permanent tribunal for the purpose of settling disputes,- etc., on the lines of the board which adjudicated after the 1320 strike. A Dunedin remit providing for tho delivery of lectures where desired by members, country members to bo given every facility in order that they may attend, was agreed to. A Wellington proposal that the railway officers should receive similar treatment to that enjoyed by the officers of other State departments in connection with the staff reports of tho controlling officers received unanimous support, and it was also decided to agree to a remit from the Executive Committee that the department be requested to notify the staff of the qualifications necessary for advancement from grade to grade, and to higher positions in the district offices.
It was agreed that as railway work is so widely different from the classes of work controlled by other State departments, the Railway Department should not come within the scope of the Uniformity Committee. Upwards of twenty other remits of minor importance were considered and dealt with.
