CITY FINANCES
THE FOUR CENTRES. DUNEDIN - SAID TO BE THE HEAVIEST HATED. In the course of an address on city finances before the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, the president (Mr H. D. Bennett) said that as there was no uniform rating among the chief citias no accurate comparison could be made. An idea of the comparative rating, however, he said, could be gained from the following figures for 1922: 1 Auckland. —Capital value, £27,938,607; unimproved value, £15,422,262; rates received, £335,051; percentage, 2.04. Christchurch.—Capital val., £18,828,773; unimproved value, £8,645,902; rates received, £168,938; percentage, 2.00. Dunedin.—Capital value, £13,387,558; unimproved value, £5,452,586; rates received, £144,808; percentage, 2.63. Wellington.—Capital value, £30,280,890; unimproved value, £15,037,127; rates re- | ceived, £285,207; percentage, I.SO. These values had been a little reduced by the Assessment Court, but they would serve for comparative purposes. Prom the figures it would appear, he said, that Dunedin was the heaviest rated city.
