ASHBTJKTOH backs. SECOND PAT. [SrKCIAI, TO THE ‘ STAB,’] CHRISTCHURCH, June 21. Though fmo owhcad, tho weather was cold and cheerless tor the inclusion of the Ashburton Racing Lino s winter Meeting Tho special trams were not so well patronised as on Friday, nor did the club's local patrons tarn out in such strong force. As a result of tho soaking it had received tho track was very boldine, but. dried up somewhat as tho after- , noon progressed. The racing was much more interesting than on Friday, and again most of the winners returned useful prices. There was a slight improvement in the tote turnover, which reached £10,824, making £20.890 for tho meethis first day’s failure., ."Royal Star was well backed for the Second Hurdle Handicap, the. only others m demand being Livelihood and i>ol .rocl.. I’ackers were evidently of the opinion that it was only a question of Koval Star standing up to win, and their judgment vras vindicated. Flying Master showed tbe wav for seven furlongs, which was apparently tire end of his tether, for he tnen faded right out. Fart Regal led round the fop turn, but once into line ior home Koval Star and Likelihood wore in charge. At the last fence the latter ’•;m dov/r: badly and interfered with the f ivorite. When both v. ; rre, straightened no they fought out a great finish right la the "post." Royal Star just struggling h one hv a head. A long way back came Agnola,” followed by Pomposo. Bellroek ]< st his rider at the stand jump, while. 'Frisco Mail came to grief in tho back s, retch. This marked Royal Star’s first v in over hurdles, but. it was not an im-
pressivo event. Several of the eleven starters for the ATinchmore Hark Handicap were well befriended. especially Thorndale. Warscor, Sir Walter.'ami Marine. At the post Sir \ /alter ami Courcolclln ■were troublesome, and both pot badly away. ,Tampins out brilliantly .Marine soon opened up a useful lead from Thonulalo and W arseer, but -the latter soon dropped right back. At tin distance Thomdale, looked almost a co nin winner, bub was challenged by M-rkic, and in a ding-dong finish Markie i-< ck to his task more penerously than I - : favorite, and scored by a bead, after

The Winter Steeplechase- produced a much more interesting contest than FnI' sy's. cross country event. Though raised 1 ;jb Galway was again installed favorite, ■- Sole there was liberal support for Paid Pry and the bracketed pair-- Tigcrland and ' ’hineord —tho latter of whom raced in hr Hilaries Campbell’s interest. Mishaps r rrne early, for at the first fence Woodtiw fell and Intolerance ran off. Pass Eg the stand Sherlock had a useful lead f-om Tokomairiro, Tigcrland, ami Oalv ay, whp wore racing in dose order, v rule Tainni camo down. There was ih.tle change till well into the hack s: might, whore Tokomairiro had charge, h s immediate attendants being Sherlock and Tigerland, with Galway and Paul Pry some distance away. Half a rniie from hamo Sherlock was again in charge, and a little further on Tigcrland disposed of Tokomairiro. In the ran to the post Slier- ’ >ck held his advantage and defeated j'igerland by three lengths. The winner gave a fine exhibition of jumping, as did Tigcrland, who is not yet ready. Galway did not jump as briskly as on Friday, ;;nd the extra weight anchored him over the concluding stages. Paul Pry and Whipcord both gave poor showings. None of tho riders who came down were any the worse for their mishaps. Speculation war, particularly brisk on the Melrose Trot, which attracted Use biggest field of the meeting. There was plenty of money for Kagol Pointer. Generator, and Frank Dillon. Bridget Lynn was an early leader, hut at the end of six furlongs Generator, Talent, and Winsome Melody were in charge isbmu Nnrol Pointer, Lady Peterson, and Logic, Generator was first into line for home, but soon gave place to Logic. In the meantime Rebel and Nelson A lac had been making np their ground in great style, .Before reaching the distance Rebel had the result in safe keeping, and scored just as easily ns on Friday, in the smart time of 2min 59 l-s?ec. A great soi-to between Logic and Nelson -Mac for .second place ended in favor of (he latter by a head. Will Oakland was hacked with confidence for tho County Handicap, while there was solid support also for Radiol, Ckmcase, and Paddy's Hope, m a goes! pool. All through the first half-mile Paddy’s Hope and Will Oakland were well clear, and it was not till well into tho home straight that any change took nlaee in the positions. There Radial and iTuncase made forward moves, and Carmine put in a strong challenge, Paddy’s Hope always had it on Will Oakland when it came to business, and scored derisively by three lengths by a fine finishing effort. Carmine, who appeared to meet with some early interference, cut WO! Oakland out of second money, wlidc Radial headed the others. . This made C. Emerson’s first win at ilm mooting, and placed him at the head of the winning jockey list.
After breaking the ice in the previous race Emerson's meant in the Morten Hack Handicap, Prompter,, was strongly backed Knocklyn wan in almost equal demand, •while there wan fair support also far Queen Balboa and Miss Minerva, All through the first half-mile Knocklvn, Miss Minerva, and Proiiliman wore in charge. The last-named looked a winner till pressure. came to be pat on, when lie retired in favor of Incursin and Queen Balboa, In a battle royal between this pair Incursio just won by a neck. After being slow to begin Prompter was patting in great work over the last furlong, but Knocklyn faded out badly. Royal Despatch, who is mentioned as one of P. I). Jones’s Australian team, was never
prominent. Betting was so brisk on the Wakanni Handicap as to constitute a record for the meeting. Whi],e Solferite was entrusted with more monSy than any horse that had ‘previously .started he quite failed to justify the confidence reposed in him, f.»r at no part of the journey did Solferino’s son look to have winning prospects. Wharf edale and Dancing Days were soon out in front forcing the pace, with Radial a long way back. No sooner had .Dancing Days taken Wharfeclale’s measure, than she was challenged by Radial am! Prosperity. This pair fought out an interesting finish, which ended in favor of Radial, who went out third favorite, hy .half a length- It was a spirited performance on the winner’s part, and showed that he is hack to his host form.
