Tho Hon. G. J. Anderson, accompanied by his private secretary (.Mr F. M. Sherwood), came from Gore to Dunedin by train this morning, and went on to Lvt'telton to catch the ferry steamer. Ho is to leavo Wellington for Auckland on Saturday. Mr W. D. Wallace, of Timaru, will replace Mr M. Foley as clerk of the Magistrate's Court at Dunedin, and Mr Foley, who has been transferred to Chrislchurch, leaves next week. Miss Margaret V. M'Gregor,_ M.A.. was vesterdav appointed to a position on the staff nf "the" Girls' High School. Mr A. J. Gillman, M.A., a member of the- staff of the Boys' High School, was promoted to n. grade B position. Applications for a grade D position in the Boys' School were referred to the Appointments Committee, with power to act. Mr G. R. Baudinet. who has bee" connected with tho wharf Customs Office for (tho last, ten years, has been transferred to Wellington, and Yesterday afternoon was met by a numbe-r of his friends of the wharf offices and Harbor Board and was presented with a Hailstone bag and a fountain pen as a token of their esteem and recognition of his services.

At the Christcliurch Competitions last .night Miss Ada Phillips (Dunedin) tied with Miss Patricia Lythgoe in the ballet dance betwen twelve and sixteen years, with 78 pi-inls each. Miss Anita Winkel (Dunedin) was first in the character recital and third in the ladies' musical monologue. Miss Roberta Williams (Dunedin) was first for reading at sight, under sixteen, and in the mezzo song Miss Eva Marshall (Oamaru) was second. News has been received of the death of Mr V. G. David, a well-known evangelist, better known as " Tamil David," who recently passed away in Ceylon. Much of his work was done in India. He was a member of the Rev. Gcorgo Grubb's evangelistic party in Australia, which, with the exception of Messrs David and Campbell, visited this city about twenty-five years ago. " Tamil David " was also woll known on account'of booklets printed and circulated by him, A private message from Auckland reports the death there of Mrs Roy'Traycs, on Tuesday of this week. Mrs Trayes was well known in Port Chalmers and Dunedin under her maiden name of Natalina M'Callum. She studied under Miss Ray Jackson, and became a most successful soprano solo singer. The death was quite j unexpected.
