TAXATION COMMISSION
THE AUCKLAND SITTING. LPee Ukited Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 8. The Taxation Commission sat to-day. Mi'J. (1. Haddon, barrister and solicitor, said he objected to the land tax because it did not tax the individual according to his ability to pay, because it taxed the man who had no money to pay and often actually on the debts ho owed, because it was'an arbitrary tax on one class of property, audi because of the difficulty in collecting. Income tax .should be regarded in tho light of a family tax, allowance being made for the other adult members of a family. Companies should bo treated in the same way as persons. A person, or a, firm could not compete on level terms with companies if a company paid no income tax. Xo difference should bo niado in the taxation of incomes from debentures and from other sources. There might bo added a third' chass ; suggested by Hartley Withers,. that of income produced by inherited wealth or received b# gift.
