At the monthly meeting of the West Haribor Borough Council a resolution of sympathy was carried with the relatives of the ‘late Mr James Farquharson, an old resident of the borough. Advice has been received from the Defence Department, Wellington, that Mr Garth R. Stoneham, second son of Lieu-tenant-colonel A. Stoneham, V.D., and Mrs" Stoneham, of Gisborne (formerly of Queen’s drive, Musselburgh), has been successful in passing his lieutenant’s examination, for which he sat in Gishomo early this year. Mr Stoneham was company sergeant-major of the Gisborne High School Cadets for three years prior to coming to the (Medical School. . A London cable states that Mr A. J. Fisher, who has been appointed director of the Elam School of Art at Auckland, will sail in the Ruahine. The Waiapu ‘ ChurchGazette’ for April, contains a memorial notice of the late Rev, F. W. Martin, who died at Napier on March 2. 'Mr Martin was ordained by the late Primate, Bishop Nevill._ He served as assistant curate at A!) Saints’ for two years, was vicar of Clyde, 1886-91, and of . "Gladstone, 1892-95. Ho then removed to : tho North Island, where he ministered at Opotiki and Waipukurau for thirteen years. He then became Cathedral librarian, hav- ; xng retired from tho active ministry owing to his deafness. He lost, an elder son at Gallipoli. He was an ardent student all his life, and was ever ready to aid Ids brethren. He was of a cheerful and trustful disposition, and wa.s held in high esteem by his follow workers. Staving a.t the Excelsior Hotel aro Mr and 'Mrs J. Conroy (Tiraam), Mr and Mrs R, A. Richards and Miss N. Gaffney (Wairnate), Mr A. S. Mobs (Wellington). Mr G. Pilcher (Invercargill), and Mr H. Brinkman (Christchurch). The visitors’ book at the Grand Hotel contains the names of the following newly-arrived guests : —Mr S. itulljames (Auckland), Mr C. A. Quoin© (Christchurch). Sir H. H. Alien (Hawera.), Mr G. F. Mather (Wellington), Mr W. E. Jackson (Wellington), Mr P. Hockley (Christchurch), Mr R. A. Lock (Wellington), and Mr C. A. Johnson (Wellington). Mr W. J. Feeney, who has occupied the position of chief clerk at Milton' railway station during the past two years, has received notice of his promotion to tho position of station master at Dannevirke.
