CONCILIATION COUNCIL

A COMPLETE AGREEMENT. At a Conciliation Council sitting yesterday, a complete agreement wasYeached between the New Zealand Paper Mills, Ltd., and tho Dunedin Paper Mills Employees’ Industrial Union of Workers. Tho principal provisions of the agreement are as follows;—In shift work eight hours arc to constitute a day’s work; tho Woodhaugh Mills hours to be arranged so that work would cease at 12 o’clock on Saturdays. Shifts to rotate weekly. Youths under nineteen years of age not to bo employed on night shift. For day workers forty-eight hours to constitute a week’s work; work to be done between 7.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. live days a week, and from 7.30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. At Mataura Mills the hours to be fortyfour per week; to be worked between 8 a.m. and 5 • p.m. five days a week, and from 8 a.m. till noon on Saturdays. The hours of work for youths under the age of nineteen years, and for females, to be forty-four hours a week. The following rates of wages were agreed to:— Machine men, 2s Id per hour; first dryer man, Is lOd per hour, and second dryer man, Is 9d per hour. Machine assistants (Woodhaugh Mills only), Is 9d per hour; heater men, Is lljd per hour; cutter men, Is 10|-d; and ripper men, Is 10 jd; first finisher, Is lid per hour, and second finisher, Is 9jd. Boiler-house men, Is lOd per hour; and balers, Is lOd. All other adult workers, Is 9d an hour. Youths to be employed at the following rates: —Fourteen to fifteen years of age, £1 3s 6d per week; fifteen to sixteen years, £1 8s 6d; sixteen to seventeen years, £1 13s 6d; seventeen to eighteen years, £2 3s fid; eighteen to nineteen years, £2 13s fid; and thereafter the minimum' wage to be paid. Females to be paid at the following rates: —First six months, 18s fid per week; second six months, £1 Is; third six months, £1 3s fid; fourth six months, £1 6s; fifth six months, £1 8s fid; sixth six months, £1 11s; seventh six months, £1 13s fid; eighth six months, £1 16s; ninth six months, £1 19s; and thereafter £2 5s per week. Forewoman in charge of room, £2 10s. Overtime, time and a-half for tho first four hours, and double time thereafter.

Tho holidays were fixed in. terms of tho present award. The preference and underrate workers’ clause were similarly fixed. The scope of the award covers the industrial district of Otago and Southland; tho award to come into force on Friday, and remain in operation for two years.
