Campbell, chairman of tho District Council controlling the Peninsula, wrote stating that his council had recommended that Beach road, from Dunedin to Portobelo be declared a main highway. The Highways Board, in acknowledging receipt of the recommendation, pointed out the da-sh-ability of the Peninsula being declared a county under the Counties Act. If this were done tho Highways Board would consider the council's recommendation. The board was not anxious to include road boards amongst the local bodies that were to do the board’s work. The Chairman said the position could be forced by getting a petition signed by the majority of the ratepayers of the 1 emnsula, praying for a Commission to bo appointed. He understood the Peninsula Road Board was favorable, but the other road boards on the Peninsula did not seo where the benefit would come in. *l\!r Allen- thought it was something of a quibble for the Highways Board to turn down road boards, tor such boards a few years ago were given the powers of county councils. Mas it worth the expense of reviving this county to obtain one-third of the upkeep from the Highways Board of ten miles of road?
Mr Dickinson thought it would pay to have tho Peninsula, made a countyj otherwise the townships would probably go in for town boards. Ho would move that three canvassers be appointed to canvass the district with the object of establishing a county. After further discussion it was resolved to lot consideration stand over, further particulars to be obtained meanwhile. MOTOR SPEED LIMIT. It was resolved to enforce on roads in this district a motor speed limit of eigh« teen miles an hour, with a reduced speed to ten miles round bends and from Broad Bay to Portobello. , REPORTS. | In Broad Bay subdivision the surface* ; man during the past month had been sea« i walling at Bowley’s and Hinkley’s Bay.
