HIGHWAYS BOARD
PUKEURI-LINDIS PASS ROAD. [Special to the ‘Star.’] OAMARU, January 25. At a, meeting of the Waitaki County Council to-day, dealing with the action of the Main Highways Board in rejecting the Pukeuri to Lindis Pass road, Cr T. A. Munro (member for thb riding) said the county should reiterate its demand that the road be proclaimed a main highway, and should bitterly oppose the expenditure of moneys from the county general fund on tho main arterial roads, which would be taken out to the detriment of the riding accounts. It was not right that tho ratepayers outside the actual scope of the main road should have to contribute funds out of tho riding fund to maintain a main road which they might never use. Tho back country settlers also did not see the force of contributing to main roads which ran parallel with the railway. These matters were fully thrashed out at the Counties Conference, and Waitaki should uphold the decisions of all the delegates to that conference that all main roads which were feeders to the railways should he treated first instead of roads parallel with tho lines. Cr A. MTnncs also stated that the back country roads about Lindis were one of the most paying feeders to the railway the Government had in the county.
It was finally decided that the Government inspector Air Bruce) bo asked to attend a special meeting of the council in order to explain the working of the Act, as the Highways Board did not seem to be sure of its own procedure.
