ALLEGED “RINGING-IN”

GOLDING AND GAPES BEFORE COURT. REMAND GRANTED. A fair number of the sporting fraternity attended the Police Court this morning, when James Golding and William Percy Capes appeared before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., in connection with ihe now notorious “ Ringing-in ” of the trotter Willie Lincoln.

Each was charged with conspiring with the other, and with William Williamson, to defraud the Southland Racing Club by substituting the trotting horse mentioned for the horse Lookout. Mr Hanlon appeared for Capes. Detective Beer had charge of'the case for the police, and asked for a _ remand till Friday, when, he said, a third man (Williamson) was to appear on remand, it was desired to have them all appear together. Probably it would be necessary to ask for a further remand.

On the question of hail, Detective Beer said that this had been already fixed _at Christchurch; but in the case of Golding it had not been forthcoming, and he had been in custody.

It was pointed out that Golding was a laboring man in poor circumstances, and bail ' to the same extent as that feed for the other accused would bo prohibitive. The remand asked for was granted. Bail was fixed in Capos’s case at £250, with two sureties of £250 each; and in the case of Golding at £2OO, with two sureties of £IOO each. A condition in each case was that the accused report daily to the police.
