Proposals to speed up trains and for more economical working of the lines have been considered by the British railway companies. Among the schemes are heavier and more _ powerful locomotives and longer trains; signalling; manual porterage eliminated by the employment of electric luggage trolleys and conveyers; carriage doors to be self-shntting; improved methods for the issue and cancellation of tickets to do away with the army of railway ppnchers, examiners, and other offioials.
