NIGHT OR DAY BAKING?

THE SYDNEY DISPUTE* STRIKE IN .OPERATION. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright, Australian and N.Z. Press Association. SYDNEY, January 14. A mass meeting of the .Operative Bakers’ Union confirmed the previous decision to cease work as from January 12 unless the master bakers agreed to day baking. It was decided that a general strike in the industry should commence as from Saturday last. The employers are not perturbed, and state that there is plenty of labor available to enable them to continue their daily supplies. They will taka immediate action against the union for a breach of the award.

A number of the bakers continued opera dons with scratch operatives and succeeded in supplying some of their customers. Several large firms are quite satisfied that their employees should commence not earlier than o o’clock, hut owing to the strike meeting decision the operatives are unable to agree to work for isolated firms. The master bakers claim that over 5,000 surplus loaves were baked by the emergency measures which were adopted. A cute dodge on the part of one of the leading firms was to induce the operatives to put sultanas in the dough. They thus became pastrycooks in lieu of bakers and outside the ambit of the strike decision, ■SETTLEMENT EFFORTS. January 14. Mr J. B. Holme (Commissioner of Conciliation) is consulting both parties to the dispute with a view to effecting a settlement. Meanwhile the union is picketing the bakeries in case any of the operatives are inclined to weaken.
