STREET IMPROVEMENTS.

TO TTir KHUKU' Sir,—Permit me to draw public attention to a piece of corporation work which is being carried out at the comer of Constitution street and London street. Work of a permanent nature has been commenced without any attempt being made to straighten out the street to its proper line. At that part the street is too ■narrow for motor traffic. The cost of widening it would not be great, and the parsimony' shown in the present undertaking is in marked contrast to the expenditure on roads in other parts of the town. The old syntom of ward representation had some .advantages, Inasmuch that ,a, councillor would see that his ward did not suffer unduly hy any niggardliness. There appears to lie no satisfactory reason why the street should not bo formed as surveyed, and thus conform to a straight line from Irvine and Stevenson's brick wall to Dr Fitzgerald's frontage. It is unfortunate that private owtfers have for so long been allowed to encroach to such an extent on the. public roadway; but where the matter of the general progress of the town has to be considered this should not weigh with the council. Visitors to the Exhibition will expect to see London street something more (ban the rugged thoroughfare it. is at present. A strong protest should be entered by residents and ail interested in town planning .against such foeblo dforts towards town improvement.—l am, etc., Look Ahead, December 21.
