BOAT TRAGEDY. TWO MEN DROWNED. A Gore telegram states that Georg M'Corkindale (aged twenty-six, single) am William M'Gowan (aged nineteen, single) who were employed by William Pannett a Waiwera South, were in a boat on thWaiwera River on Sunday when it wa swamped. Both were drowned. Advic from Balclutha is that both bodies hav> been recovered. The boat was in a leak; condition, and the tragedy, which oc curred about a quarter of a mile from th mouth, at a place whore there were hig and steep banks on either side of the rivei was witnessed by two mates of the de ceased—G. L. B. Henderson and P. I Anderson—who were unable to render as sistanco on account of the inaccessibl nature of the locality. , KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR. Details of the happenings which results in the death of Michael Faul, who wa knocked down at Wellington by a mote car on December 5, were outlined befor the coroner (Mr W. E. Page) yesterday. Evidence was given by several witnesse as to the motor-car accident which cause | the deceased’s injuries. The car wr driven backwards out of the garage an very slowly along the road towards a sho on the other side. Deceased, who \yaa. a elderly man, was walking towards tl shop when the car struck him and push?; him along the road for a few feet. i Dr Hector gave evidence as to deceased i condition when admitted to the hospita He was suffering from several abrasioi and a wound on his head, but there wf no fracture of any bones. The deceased’ heart was very fatty, and, in his opinior the cause of clea-tb was syncope, resultin from a fatty disease of the heart. _ Deat, might have' occurred at any time irrespet tive of the accident. A verdict was returned that death wa due to heart failure, the deceased bavin; been knocked down by a motor car. De ceased’s death was most probably acceler ated by the accident and by the subse quent anfcsthetic.
