FIRE AT ST. CLAIR
A largo two-story wooden building of eight rooms, situated at Cliffs road, St. Clair, was considerably damaged by fire last evening. In response to an alarm sent in at 6.42, a machine from headquarters and the South Dunedin section of the brigade arrived quickly on the scene. When the firemen set to work the part of the building was ablaze, 'llm water supply was very inadequate, and it was only by the strenuous efforts of the firemen that the flames wore prevented from eating their way into the lower portion of the house. The top flat, consisting of four rooms, was gutted, while practically the whole of the furniture and effects on that floor were destroyed. The outbreak was caused through a lighted candle coming in contact with the curtains or some linen In one of the bedrooms. The building is owned by Dr Martin, and was occupied by Mr C. J. Wat (.son and his family. It is insured for £7OO with the Standard Oiiico, and the contents and per-, .soiial effects are insured for £360 with the South British Office. A quantity of merchandise stored on the premises is_ insured for £IOO with the South British Office. The contents in the lower portion of the dwelling were slightly damaged by water.
