Bridge hostesses during the week included Mesdames Lin do Ferguson, Douglas Ramsay, Misses Stock, Bridgeman, Siao, Ulrich, Edmond.
Mrs Martin (Eoslyn) gave an enjoyable “at home” on Thursday afternoon for Mrs Neville, who goes to the country very soon to visit her sister, Mrs Stephens. Mis Martin received her guests in the drawing room, wearing a handsome dress of black satin. During the afternoon Mjss White delighted all present with her piano playing. Tea was served downstairs in the dining room, spring flowers being used as table decoration. Among those present wore Lady Ross, Ladv Fenwick. Mesdamcs Neville, Richards, Fitchett, White. Oldham, W. Fitchett, Glcndining, Burnside, Lo Cren, Vivian, Vallange, D. Ramsay, E. L. Macassov, M'Kellar, Chrystall, JackFon, ' Misses Macassey, Williams, Jones, White, Vallange, Fenwick, Cameron, Blomfield, Glcndining, Ross, Richards, Joachim, Revnolds.
Miss D. Fleming is visiting friends in Canterbury.
Miss May Downio Stewart accompanied her brother, the Hon. Downio Stewart, south, and stayed at the Grand Hotel for a day or two, returning again to Wellington on Thursday. Mrs Petre (Christchurch) is the guest of her son, Mr Bernard Petre and Mrs Petre. Tho Misses Shand, who spent_the terra holidays with their mother in Pitt street, have returned to “Craighead,” Tirnaru. Tho engagement is announced of Miss Mona Macquorn Gairdner, eldest daughter of Major and Mrs B. Macquorn Gairdner, of Patunga, Taumarunui, formerly of Southland and Dunedin, to Mr William Henry Kent, of Suffolk, England. Miss Kate Rattray has gone north to stay with Mrs Gladstone Robinson, Oakwood, Tirnaru. Mrs H. Do C. M‘Arthur gave an enjoyable bridge party on Thursday evening. Among the players were Mr and Mrs A. L. Isaacs, Air and Mrs J. E. Macassey, Mr and Airs E. Denny, Alosdames Bethnno, APKenzie, Hilton, Messrs Myles and Dunlop. On Tuesday and Wednesday of next week a novel bazaar is to bo held in the Early Settlers’ Hall, tho promoters being the ladies of the parish at Anderson Bay, to augment the funds of St. Michael’s Church. The hall is to be arranged as an old English village, with quaint street and timbered houses. Costumes of the period will bo worn by those working at the fete,, and special entertainments have been arranged. In “ Wirthwhyle” village delicious tea will be served in'an old world and competitions will bo held upon tho village green. Airs Statham and party will provide tho entertainment on the Tuesday evening, Miss Holland and her entertainers being rcsponsiblo for Wednesday night’s programme.
The Misses Harris (London) have been entertained at a number of small functions during tho week. They leave next Tuesday, accompanying their father, Mr Leslie Harris, through the North Island, visiting the various towns and journeying as fains Rotorua and Taupo on the way to Auckland.
On Saturday evening last Mrs Lindo Ferguson gave a most enjoyable bridge party to welcome home Airs and Aliss Stock, who recently returned from America. Among tho players were Alcsdames Riley, FitcheU, J. A. Cook, Hilton, M'Kibbin, Stock, Misses Denniston, Sise, Williams (2), Stock.
On Tuesday evening Airs (Dr) R. S. Stephenson, St. Clair, gave a most delightful “coming-out” dance in Jay’s Rooms for her daughter, Miss Mary Stuart Stephenson. The rooms were prettily decorated, and the music supplied by Roi Don’s orchestra was much appreciated. Airs Stephenson received her guests wearing a black spangled gown mounted on satin. Miss Mary Stuart Stephenson’s frock was of blue and silver made in Early Victorian style, and she carried a posy of forget-me-nots. Among those present were Mosdames Peter Barr and Roni Clapnerton, Misses Le Crcn, Gallaway, E. Hacgitt, Laidlaw, Nancy Barr, F. Al'lntosh, Todd. Bridgcman, Blomfield, VaHangc, Reid, M'Curdie. Johnstone, Maloney, Messrs Edmond, Whitson, Geerin, Alaunsell, Solomon, Todd, Biss, Sinclair, Halstcd, Reid, HaggitL Airs T. Brown (Broomiolanda) returned on Tuesday after a two months’ holidayspent touring in the North Island.
Mrs N. A. Panham (Cashmere Hills) is tho guest of Mrs Tom Brown (Montecillo). Alisa Denniston leaves this week by the Mocraki for Melbourne.
Aliss Kathleen APLcan is down from Wellington and is staying with Airs APKenzio (Belleknowes).
Miss Cargill gave a most enjoyable “ at home” for her sister, Airs Petre (Christchurch), at her homo. Musselburgh Rise, on Wednesday afternoon. Aliss Cargill received her guests in tho drawing room wearing a beautiful gown of soft black satin with black lace sleeves. Mrs Pctre’s gown was of blue velvet with silver lace sleeves. A most recherche tea was served in the dining room, tho table being decorated with spring flowers. Among those present were Mosdames J. M. Ritchie. B. C. Haggitt, Maitland Gard’ner, G. Turnbull, Maitland, Fo then pah am, Haggitt, Atoms, Callaway, Macassey, sen., Aliases Morris, Macassey. Haggitt. etc. Among the members of the British Immigration Delegation who were bore recently was Miss Gladys Potts, M.8.E., who while in Dunedin was the guest of Airs Frank Clapporton. Tho Otago branch of the Victoria Longue took the to welcome and entertain Miss Potts, feeling glad that in some small measure some return could be made for flic very great kindness and hospitality extended to members of the Victoria League when travelling through Britain. She addressed women at the Otago Club Rooms upon immigration problems, JL. subject with which she has familiarised herself in tho six years spent in travelling through Canada, India, South Africa, and at present New Zealand and Australia. She was afterwards entertained at luncheon at the Savoy Rooms by the Dunedin Executive. Among those present were Mesdames B. C. Haggitt, Clapperton. J. M. Ritchie. Laidlaw, Enrdley Reynolds, Bowler, Melville, Lindo Ferguson, Misses Ross, J. Conk, F. J. Ross, Jackson, and Burton. Airs Clapperton alsji gave a most delightful bridge party for Miss Potts during her stay here. Alisa Vera James (Airs A. H. Alnnro] and her husband were the guests of Mr G. G. Gillette, oil millionaire fa brother of K. C. Gillette, safety razor millionaire), together with 200 others at the beautiful mansion of Gloria Swanson, Beverley Hills, Los Angeles, recently acquired: by Mr Gillette. The party was given in honor of tho bride of Mr Gillette, jun. Mrs Munro waa pronounced the belle of the evening, and was chosen with her huebfid to open tho dance, after which she was chosen dance partner to Air Cornelius Vanderbilt. Aire Munro wore a beautiful Paris gown with straight lines from shoulder to ankle of black georgette with bead trimmings. The Americans were very much impressed with tho presence of New Zealanders at tho gathering, and asked several questions about New Zealand and its people.
