Kawau as the home of Sir George Grey has many interesting associations. It was there that Sir George Grey welcomed the late Duke of Edinburgh, uncle of King George V., when he came to New Zealand in the Galatea over fifty years ago, and renewed n friendship commenced several years earlier in England and in South Africa. It was there also that the Maori “ King ” Tawhiao, who was about to proceed to England, went to seek advice of Sir George as to certain matters. The latter, knowing the weakness of his visitor, agreed to become a total abstainer in order to prevail upon Tawhiao to do the' same. The “King's” word was pledged and loyally kept throughout his visit" to Britain. It was likewise, from Kawau that in 1880 Sir George wrote the lengthy letter of advice to King Maieton of Samoa in connection with his dispute with Germany.
