LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. The thirteenth annual meeting of tho Royal Life-saving Society (Otago Head Centre) was held last night, 'Mr W. Fleming occupying the chair. The annual report was adopted on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Pereira. It read as follows:—“ Tho executive congratulates members on tho way in which they have carried on tho work of tho society. Owing to the unfavorable weather, as well as a lack of interest on Iho part of tho swimmers, no awards have been gained this season. In spite of this Otago Head Centro managed to semi a Wigrara Shield team to compete at Timam Unfortunately ona of its members took very bad cramp early in tho competition, and tho team war forced to withdraw. The society is in a very healthy position financially. Thanks are duo to all member’s who have taken an interest in its objects, and to various contributors to tho society’s funds. The executive calls the attention of present members to tho advantage of increasing the membership of the society. It feels that if members will make a determined effort, many new names could bo added to the membership roll and tho society strengthened, both financially and numerically, and tho work done by the society in Otago considerably increased. The executive notes with pleasure that the Government lias again granted tho Royal Life-saving Society the sum of £SO. In conclusion, tho executive wishes to draw the attention of members to the following extract from (ho annqnl report of the Central Executive for 1921:—‘If only 10 per cent, of those holding awards of the society were to teach and present for examination two candidates during tho present season, all previous records would bo passed,’” Tho following office-bearers were elected:—Vice-patron, Viscount Jcllicoe ; president, Mr H. 11. Henderson; vicepresidents—the mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley), Messrs E. H. Jones, W. Fleming, and J. A. Park; hon. medical officers—Drs Evans, ■ Fulton, and (Moore; hon. treasurer, Mr It. Allen; hon. secretary, Mr R. D. Paul; hon. solicitor, Hon. C. E. Statham; auditor, 'Mr It. D. Brower; Executive Committee—Messrs Low, Bamiatyno, Pereira, and M’lndoo; representatives on Swimming Committee—Messrs Paul and Low ; delegate to Dominion Council, Mr W. If. Benson. A circular was received from the Cculval ■Executive (London), which contained the following message from tho King:—"l am commanded by the King to thank you for tho annual report of tho R.L.S.S., and to express to you and those who work with iyou at home and through the head centres and branches of your society throughout the Empire His Majesty's congratulations on the excellent results achieved last year, when the unprecedented number of 28,858 awards were granted. The King is pleased to note the progress made in the direction of inducing boys and girls to attend classes of instruction, and hopes that the head masters and teachers generally will further the knowledge the society promotes in having the youth instructed how to render first aid 1 , which cannot be overestimated,”
