Mr J. W. Weeks (Secretary for War) will ask Congress for an appropriation of 25,0C0,0C0d0l for the and air services for 1924. Fifteen millions of this sum will be spent in new equipment, and the remainder in general operating expenses. This appropriation is twice the amount which is available for tho army and air services for 1923. It is expected that Mr Weeks will inform Conguvs tnat increased appropriations will lie necessary annually hereafter adequately to assure the country’s defence. In tho Air Department the United States now has only 450 planes available, tho majority of which are tho old war stock of the many. Mr Weeks hopes to increase tho number to 2,500, which would bo available in the event of an outbreak of hostilities,A. and N.Z. Gable. v
