His Honor Mr Justice Sim will leave Wellington ou Friday and arrive here on Saturday. * , „ The new chief detective (-Mr A. I'.. Ring (Auckland). At Mothven’s Foundry yesterday the employees met in the dining room to say good-bye to Mr James Ferguson, of the brassmouldcrs’ department, who, on account of Ins wile’s health, is severing a thirteen-year-old connection' with the firm, and leaves this week for Australia. Mr J. A. Brown, in handing him (on behalf of the staff) a substantial cheque, expressed regret at losing a very competent craftsman and a “jolly good fellow.”

Accompanying them was Miss Brain, a London school teacher, who has spent a year in Canada, and has come to tho dominion to sec our educational system. She will come as far as Christchurch, and will then return to London. On August 21 Misses F. Wilburs, Amy Baddon, and L. Downing will also arrive from Canada. The first named will take up a position at New Plymouth, Miss Pnddou will exchange with Miss Barr, of tho Richmond Road School, and Miss L. Downing will go to Maimrewa. On Sunday evening members of the local Chinese community to tho number of about sixty met in tho Chinese Church, Carroll street, to do honor to the Rev. Mr and Mrs 11. Davies, of tho Canton Villages Mission. Some eighty European friends were also present by invitation. Mr Chin Fool had charge of the proceedings. Supper was provided by the Chinese. During her tong furlough from Canton Airs Davies has devoted a great deal of her time to the Chinese Church, and ns a token of their appreciation the Chinese presented her with a very handsome and ornate typically New Zealand inkstand. The death occurred at Tavistock Hospital, Lyall Bay, Wellington, on Alomlay, of Afr Thomas Sutcliffe, who for many years held tho position of accountant in the Dunedin branch of tho National Insurance Company. He was afterwards appointed manager of that company’s office in Wellington. During his residence in Dunedin he was a prominent tennis player and bowler, being a member of the Haiti in a Club, and after leaving ho joined (ho Wellington Bowling Club. Air Sutcliffe had been in ill-health for the last few years, and his -death was not unexpected. Ho married a daughter of tho Info Afr Joseph Braithwaite, and his widow, three daughters, and a- sou survive him. An Auckland Press Association telegram states that the secretary of the Alelanesian Mission has been advised that- the Bishop of Melanesia underwent another operation in London on Saturday, The operation, was successful. He is expected to sail at tho end of January.
