DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. Mr A. C. Hanlon presided over tho annual meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club, hold last evening in the club rooms. There was a fair aitendaneo of members. Tho annual report showed that there had been a falling off in all the chief sources of revenue, and an .extra- day’s racing in February, which'Was intended a.s a benefit for the Dunedin orphanages, resulted in a substantial loss to tho club. Tho Government taxation was so severe that it was impossible for tho chib to make any headway, and as a result Die proposed improvements at the course for the benefit of members and patrons must be postponed until relief from taxation is obtained. It was sincerely to be hoped that this relief would not he much longer withhold ; otherwise the club would- be compelled to curtail its operations. The profit and Joss account, showed a deficit, of £2.229 3s 6d. Dining Die year the membership increased bv .seven, and now totalled 565.

The President, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, said it was needless for him to say very much. Seeing that (hero was not a. large attendance of members, it looked as if the members of tho club were quite satisfied with the work of the committee during the past year. From a, racing point of view tho club had had a successful year, hut from a financial point of view it had unfortunately to hear a loss of £2,229. During the year horse owners had stood by tho einh exceedingly well, and tho nominations ami acceptances have been quite satisfactory. -Members, ho said, would notice that an Jxtra day's racing had been obtained, and the day was added to the February meeting. It was decided to devote any profits arising fi'ora (he day to orphanages, but owing to parlkularly inclement weather the day resulted in a heavy loss to the dub. From what ho had en.id it could he seen that it was absolutely impossible for! the club to proceed with any improve-! incuts to the course, and it. would certainly not he able to undertake anything in the way of a programme of improvements until relief is forthcoming in tho matter of taxation. The totalisalw tax must be reduced, and that substantially. .Mr L. C. Hazlctt seconded tho motion for tho adoption of the report and balancesheet.

Mr W. F. Sligo said that if he underflood the position correctly, the club did not pay the taxation directly. It was tho horse owners and the- investors on the machine who paid. Tho motion Was carried. OFFICE-BEARERS,

The election of office-bearers resulted as follows;—President, .Mr A. C. Hanlon (reelected unopposed); vice-president, Mr L. 0. Hazlett (re-clcctcd unopposed); coni mi ttec —Messrs James Smith, P. Miller. W. J. Goughian, and E. H. Lough (all rcclectd); auditor, Mr George M. MacLcan.
