NOTIFICATIONS UP TO AVERAGE,

ONLY TWO MORE DEATHS,

The statement of tho position by tho Health Office at noon to-day was that for the preceding twenty-four hours there were thirteen notifications of pneumonic cases—namely, seven in Otago, three in Waitaki, and three in Southland, and that two deaths took place in Dunedin. The Dunedin Hospital report for the same period is: Throe admissions, no discharges, no deaths, thirty-two patients remaining, of whom seven are listed as dangerously ill. Thirty-one members of the nursing staff were‘off duty to-day. High Street School reopened yesterday, with six teachers and 122 pupils absent. Tho latest of (bn schools to close are Nevis, Hampden, Otokia, Romahapa, Tawauui, and Oama.ru Middle.

Two deaths from pneumonic influenza occurred in tho suburbs during'the weekend. Eight notifications of pneumonic cases in tho health district were received, making thirty-two for tho month.

READY TO MEET EMERGENCY.

TIMARU, July 23.

A public meeting called by the mayor was hold this afternoon for the purpose of considering stops to deal with a possible influenza epidemic. The district health inspector reported that seven pneumonic influenza cases were notified for July. There wore two deaths. ’The question of the organisation of a system on the lines of that employed during the last epidemic was disensesd fully, and an executive was appointed to have all details in readiness for its inauguration at tho shortest notice.

MINISTERIAL VICTIMS,

[Special to the ‘ Star.’] WELLINGTON, July 23.

The Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Education, who has been laid up for two days with influenza, was able to resume duty at Ins office to-day. Two other Ministers were absent from tho House to-night, and were stated to be suffering from tile prevailing complaint.

WELLINGTON, July 24. ’The Health Department reports that tlie cases of pneumonic influenza and pneumonia for tho various health districts for the week ended yesterday wore as follow

Auckland ; Pneumonic influenza cases eighteen, deaths seven; pneumonia cases nine, one death. Hawke’s Bay : One pneumonic influenza case; one pneumonia case. Wanganui and Taranaki ; Pneumonic influenza cases ten, no deaths; one pneumonia, case.

Wellington : Pneumonic influenza cast’s fiw. deaths two; pneumonia cases three, deaths two.

Canterbury : Pneumonic influenza cases sixty-two, deaths seven; pneumonia- cases live, -deaths two. (Pago ; Pneumonic influenza ' cases tiff v-three, deaths nineteen; pneumonia ca.-vs two, no deaths. The north qf Auckland reports no cases of influenza or pneumonia for the week.

The Health Department states that the figures quoted above strengthen the view that the .present influenza epidemic is in no way dissimilar from that of 1920.
