The danger to which St. Kilda and the Flat generally is subjected through being flooded during heavy, continuous rain vn s mentioned by Or Edgar at last night's meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council. Ho said he wished to know if the authorities had taken any steps to prevent water rushing through the new Gaversham tunnel and flooding the Flat, as it had done during the last severe flood. Had the heavy downpour continued for anotlnr hour or so very extensive damage would have been done in St. Kilda-. The council should pet some assurance from the railway engineer that such a thing war. not likely to happen again. Tho T.ayor (Mr C. Todd) and Or Kilpatrick agreed with what Or Edgar had said, and a resolution was carried to the effect that the town clerk be instructed to write to tho district traffic manager asking what steps had been taken to obviate the recurrence of water pouring through the tunnel, as had occurred during the first flood. Cr Longworth said that the Pailway Department had taken effective steps to prevent the water entering tlm tunnel by placing sandbags at tho Burnside end at the time of tho second flood. Several councillors expressed the opinion that tho line could not remain blocked with sandbags for any length of time, and then again no one would bo on the spot to place sandbags in position if a. flood occurred at any hour of the night. The mayor said that such a letter could do no harm, and would probably prove beneficial.
