A Government experimental station at Eskrnoals, in Cumberland, carried out a remarkable series of experiments for testing the explosiveness of coal dust in the course of research dealing with safety in mines. The conditions approximated those of an actual coal mine explosion, in which hundreds of lives wore lost. A gallery 750 ft long was strewn with coal dust. The gas was ignited, and a flash of flame like lightning rushed through ■lO . gallery, followed by a cloud of dense black smoke and deadly coal gas. The pit props and other colliery equipment was hurled a great distance. Later, the mine was cleared by special fans. The experiment showed the benefit of mixing stone dust with coal dust in order to reduce the strength of the explosion.—A. and' N.Z. Cable.
